About

Welcome to GW Music, a woodwind repair and servicing workshop run by Glyn West in the heart of Bath. My aim is simple: to help musicians enjoy their music to the fullest by keeping their instruments performing beautifully and reliably.

Woodwind instruments are wonderfully expressive but often temperamental, and they deserve careful, expert attention. Whether your instrument needs a quick adjustment or a complete service, I approach each job with precision, respect, and a genuine enjoyment of the craft.

Serving the local community—including students, teachers, hobbyists, and seasoned performers—I take the time to understand how your instrument feels and responds. Every repair begins with a conversation so the work truly supports your playing.

While the work is detailed, the workshop atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. I’m always happy to explain the process, answer questions, and share a bit of musical enthusiasm along the way.

If your instrument needs care, GW Music is here to help you play with confidence and joy.

Our Services

1

Minor Repairs

From simple jobs like replacing worn tenon corks, removing dents, and correcting bent keywork, to more involved repairs such as fixing cracks and fitting new bell rings,  I handle a full range of woodwind restoration and maintenance needs.

2

Check down

Inspect and adjust pad seating and regulation to ensure reliable performance, replacing corks, felts, and pads where necessary. This level of servicing is often ideal as an annual check-up for newer instruments that are generally in good condition.

3

Full Service

Fully dismantle the instrument and clean the body, polishing the keywork and removing old oil. On wooden instruments, the bore is oiled where appropriate. Corks, felts, and pads are replaced as needed, and joint or key fit is improved where necessary. The keywork and springs are then lubricated, regulated, and adjusted to ensure excellent playing condition.

4

Repad

A complete repad and overhaul is designed to return the instrument to the best possible playing condition, as close to its original state as achievable. It includes all the work carried out during a standard service, with the addition of replacing all pads, corks, felts, and—where required—springs.

5

Schools

Maximise your investment in music with on-site instrument assessments, where minor adjustments and repairs can often be completed immediately, and any more complex work is clearly quoted in advance. Instruments can be collected and returned for your convenience, and all work is supported with clear, transparent invoicing for straightforward accounting.
